Unique Perspective - ICSID Launches the World Design Talks

The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) has held its first World Design Talks. The summer 2016 event in Turkey covered transportation in megacities of emerging economies. In this case, participants took a closer look at the problem of traffic congestion in Istanbul.

The day-long event was supported by the Turkish Federation of Furniture Business Associations (MOSFED) and hosted by Icsid Board Member Alpay Er, chair of the Industrial Design Department at Istanbul’s Ozyeğin University/Istanbul Institute of Design. It featured guest speakers Professor Murat Çelik of Istanbul Technical University; Arzu H. Toker Özkurt, senior industrial design expert at Otokar Otomotiv; and Selva Gürdoğan Thomsen of Superpool.

More than 40 academics, students, designers, architects, urban planners, entrepreneurs, non-profit representatives and several Icsid Board members explored sustainable and public transportation options such as Dolmus, a responsive mini bus which is locally-generated, flexible and demand-driven. They discussed behavior changing campaigns, digital technologies and signage to better navigate traffic, as well as improved use of the seaways, pedestrian accommodations and bicycle systems.

“Industrial designers have a unique perspective to lend to the challenges inherent in today’s megacities,” says Icsid President Mugendi M’Rithaa, a professor and senior lecturer in industrial design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town, South Africa. “They are problem solvers, addressing an issue through a human-centered approach. As we develop our World Design Talks, we hope that other regions will benefit from the design innovation shared during these collaborative and multidisciplinary sessions.”

The next World Design Talks event is set for Shanghai, China in October 2016.

Icsid will become the World Design Organization (WDO) in 2017.
